Knysna is the prettiest town in South Africa but suffers from a great divide between the rich and the poor. Love Knysna Projects is a group of volunteers (mostly moms and dads) building a bridge, between those two worlds, for children.
Children from disadvantaged backgrounds rarely get to experience the joys of their own town. When you ask them where they stay, some don’t answer with “Knysna”. Instead, they mention the suburb they come from or say “township, showing how painfully small their world is.
“WE BELIEVE IN ENCOURAGING POSSIBILITIES. We believe that making children experience a bigger world opens them up to new options that will make them stronger adults.
For almost three years, Love Knysna Projects has been taking children on trips to tourist attractions, hikes and picnics on our beautiful coast. It’s incredible to experience the happiness when a child touches an elephant for the first time or eats in a restaurant for the first time.
As important is more privileged children joining us on trips so that they gain perspective by witnessing the challenges other people their age are facing. With understanding, a compassionate world is more possible. With integration there is healing. With shared experience there is shared community.
IT’S A LOT OF FUN. It’s an education in life. We want them to be proud of their town and become natural ambassadors for our tourist based economy.
We’re aiming for 26 trips in 2016. We will picnic and hike. We will visit 10 beaches, several tourist attractions, markets and festivals.
Help us help Knysna’s children. Help us build one community. Help us fulfill our dream of “One Knysna, Our Knysna.”
BECOME A VOLUNTEER. The more volunteers, the more we can do. All you need is a car with seat-belts and to contribute towards lunch. And to join us once or twice per month (most trips are on Sunday mornings). You can bring your children too.
